A learned static curve, not another manual or dynamic EQ

Match EQ averages spectral power across many windows of each file. It compares their broad shapes after removing an overall level offset, then smooths and bounds the difference. The resulting curve stays fixed during the target render; it does not react to momentary level like Dynamic EQ.

Amount scales the learned curve. Maximum boost/cut prevents an unsupported frequency region from demanding an extreme change. Smoothing favors broad tonal balance over narrow notches, while FFT quality trades speed for frequency resolution.

FAQ

What does Match EQ do?
It averages the target and reference frequency spectra, calculates their level difference per frequency region, smooths and limits that difference, then applies the learned static correction to the target timeline.
How is this different from Equalizer and Dynamic EQ?
Equalizer asks you to draw or set the curve manually. Dynamic EQ moves selected bands according to signal level. Match EQ learns one bounded static curve from a separate reference recording and applies that curve to the target.
Should target and reference be the same length or loudness?
They do not need the same length. Analysis averages representative frames independently and removes the overall spectral offset before learning tonal shape, so broad level differences have less influence. Similar musical material still produces more meaningful matches.
Can Match EQ copy a mix or mastering chain?
No. It can approximate averaged tonal balance only. It does not copy dynamics, stereo image, distortion, ambience, arrangement, performance or mastering decisions, and large corrections can sound unnatural.
