A small residual does not prove semantic equality, and lossy codecs, resampling, different edits or time-varying drift may never null. Browser decoding can itself change sample rate or padding.

Compare mix and master revisions without guessing

A visual waveform can show that two exports start at different points, but it cannot tell you whether the underlying decoded audio is otherwise close. Audio Difference Checker estimates a single signed inter-file offset, optionally flips revision B and matches its RMS level, then subtracts aligned B from aligned A.

The result is intentionally an overlap-only null test. Samples outside the shared region are excluded rather than wrapped around an edge. The report records the exact starts, overlap frame count, settings and measured residual so the result is reproducible.

What the measurements mean

A quiet residual is useful evidence that decoded signals are close under the chosen transform. It is not, by itself, proof that compressed source files are bit-for-bit identical.

FAQ

Is this the same as an ABX Audio Test?
No. ABX Audio Test is a randomized blind listening test for deciding whether a listener can identify a difference. Audio Difference Checker aligns two revisions and measures the residual signal directly; it does not score preference or audibility.
How is this different from Stereo Phase Aligner?
Stereo Phase Aligner compares the left and right channels inside one stereo file. Audio Difference Checker compares two separate files, such as mix v7 and master v8, on a shared overlap timeline.
Does a very quiet Difference prove the files are bit-perfect?
No. A low residual means the decoded signals are close under the selected offset, polarity and gain settings. Codec decoding, sample-rate conversion, dither, lossy encoding and floating-point processing can prevent a bit-perfect conclusion.
Why can the Difference output be shorter than either source?
The comparison exports only frames that exist in both revisions after the signed offset is applied. It neither wraps samples from an edge nor invents replacement audio, so the exact overlap can be shorter than either input.
